A proud member of EMC and the Ottawa Valley Consortium
The KI Canada plant in Pembroke is continuing to set a standard of excellence within its parent company. For the fourth time in the last six years, the office furniture maker has been chosen as the plant of the year within the KI Corporation, which also operates several factories in the United States.
The plants are evaluated on quality, on time shipping, safety and financial health.
"Consistently winning this award is an attestation to the dedication and pride of our employees," said Dan Mellen, Pembroke's general manager. "Their commitment to teamwork and helping the company achieve its greater goal of delivering high-quality products to our customers, is the reason our plant has won this award again."
Many employees at KI have been with the company for more than 20 years, ensuring the workforce at the plant is highly skilled and efficient. Mellen says the workers have been resilient and have been open to changing the way things are done, ensuring the plant stays ahead of its competition.
"Manufacturing is very competitive and it is important we always review and evaluate the way we operate our business, because it is paramount to our long-term success. I am confident we can remain a world-class producer of steel office filing and storage solutions, because of the commitment of our employees to stay on top," Mellen said.
KI Canada has now been operating for 24 years in Pembroke. It has continued to be a strong supporter of community initiatives and a major employer within the region's manufacturing sector.
Since 1941, KI has been positioned as the manufacturer who knows the furniture industry and is committed to providing customers with the right solutions. KI Pembroke is a standalone division of KI (Krueger International) of Green Bay, Wisconsin and is a world-class producer of steel filing and storage office furniture. The facility is located in Pembroke, Ontario with a 265, 000 sq. foot building which processes raw materials into finished product. KI products are used in a wide variety of commercial, contract, industrial and education environments around the world. Each product is tailored to suit the needs of each customer.
In October of 2012, KI introduced a new Corporate Energy Policy. From here, KI Pembroke created and implemented an Energy Management System and Employee Awareness Campaign. A 10% energy bill reduction was set as the 2013 goal. Through the first 11 months of the 2013 year, KI Pembroke has saved over 1.36 million kWh of electricity, over 500 thousand m3 of natural gas and over 2 million Gallons of water. This represents YTD reductions of 34% in electricity, 38% in gas and 36% in water.
Projects that have been completed YTD include the launch of the 2013 Employee Awareness Campaign, upgraded compressor controls, destratification fans, building envelope improvements, and timer installations on controls and motors. Every KI Pembroke employee participated in an Energy Awareness session as part of their 2013 annual training. KI Pembroke has offered several energy lunch & learns to their employees, hosted two of NRCan's Dollars to $ense Workshops and hosted their first annual energy awareness event.
The Employee Awareness Campaign has been the single largest contribution to KI Pembroke's energy savings. KI would like to take this opportunity to thank all employees for their continued participation. The contributions that were received by all employees have been the driving factor behind the success KI Pembroke has celebrated this year. We look forward to sustaining these savings, and continuing to find new energy conservation projects as a new journey begins with the 2014 year.
