September 18, 2019 Kim WolfCambridge, Guelph, Kitchener/Waterloo

At a recent SIG event in Paris, ON, hosted by Apogee Ceramics, members arrived with hopes of obtaining some insight into Visual Management.  Each member company was at a different point in their journey, but all of them shared goals of improving employee engagement and plant results, as an outcome from learning visual management.

What is visual management?

Visual management is a tool used in manufacturing to organize and communicate information, resulting in increased performance and employee engagement.

How can visual management be used in manufacturing companies?

  • Quality checks
  • Efficiencies
  • Labour pools
  • Production plan
  • Rework analysis

What are some examples of visual management devices?

  • White boards
  • Post-it notes
  • Shadow boards
  • Colour coding
  • Floor markings
  • Go – No Go pictures

Our host also shared the software that they effectively use in their workplace to share information about standardized work instructions, preventive maintenance tasks, and current events.  The information is kept up-to-date and is readily available to their teams.

Our members shared some of the successes that they have had using visual management in their daily operations meetings, quality audits, and training.  Following a plant tour where members witnessed clear examples of visual management on the production floor, members shared some benchmarking ideas and opportunities.  The event ended with enthusiasm and keen interest. Many members left the event looking forward to moving their continuous improvement journey forward another step.  THIS is what SIG events are all about – learning, sharing, and meeting others who are on the same paths.
