Protecting Employees and Safeguarding Against Machine Hazards

Two weeks ago, our members in the GTA had the opportunity to hear from Jim Farmer, who presented an overview of the various elements of effective safeguards, as well as some details regarding the Four Key Elements of Shop Floor Safety:

  • Machine Guarding, associated hazards you need to guard against, and best-practices for guard design;
  • Electrical Safety, and safe practices when working on high-powered equipment;
  • Productive Lockout, which covered the six steps of a lockout/tagout procedure;
  • Pre-Start Health & Safety Reviews, and the circumstances for when a PSR would be required

Using the guarding demo equipment he brought to the session, Jim tied together the concepts from the first three elements.  The demo unit provided a clear and tangible explanation of various elements of machine safety, in a very interactive way!

There was also some interesting discussion regarding some of our members’ questions regarding the situations they come across in their production floor.
