How to Motivate and Reward Hourly Team Members

To round off this year’s SIG events in the Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge/Guelph consortium, we met at Waterloo Brewing to discuss “How to Motivate and Reward Hourly Team Members.”  We are asking more from our entire team, as we struggle to stay competitive in a tough market.  That requires that all of our team members bring their “A game” each and every day.  We need those team members to get involved in Continuous Improvement ideas and solutions.  We need their input and their commitment.  So, how do we let them know how important they are to the success of our companies?  We divided into smaller groups and tackled this question by focusing on Recognition Programs, Establishing Teams, Increasing Accountability, and Bonus Programs.  Here are some of the creative ideas that were further discussed:

Recognition Programs:

  • Values recognition, based on company values
  • Sales referrals – gift card
  • Mentorship program – reward mentors
  • Year end bonuses
  • Attendance program
  • Lunches with salary/management staff

Establishing Teams:

  • Choose the right leaders and provide training
  • Establish a communication route and appropriate channels
  • Allow decision to be made and mistakes to occur without negative repercussions

Increasing accountability:

  • Senior management involvement and engagement
  • Peer validation
  • Focus on positive reinforcement
  • Owning errors (mistakes happen!)

Bonus programs:

  • Gift cards for work done well or for overtime
  • DPSP
  • Referral program
  • Database for ideas, suggestions, problem solving – employees collect points to “buy” swag

We left the meeting, committing to choosing one or two new ideas and introducing them to our workplace.  We will then share our successes, and challenges, to our fellow members.  This type of networking and benchmarking is what these events are all about.

We then finished our event with a tour of Waterloo Brewing’s new taphouse.  What a way to end 2019!
