SW Ontario EMC Consortium – 2020 Year End Review

It goes without saying that 2020 was a year like no other for manufacturers in SW Ontario. This year has also been the most active year for the Consortium. The level of local manufacturers working together to help each other grow and continuously improve had never been higher.

Sharing policies around keeping people safe and following government COVID regulations has really driven activity since March. Tapping into local resources and suppliers for the rush of PPE’s need was realty awesome to see. We quickly saw that everything anyone needed around PPE’s could be found locally here in SW Ontario. The sharing or resources and knowledge really let the vast majority of facilities get ahead of the game, enabling them to keep production going while keeping employees safe. With the pandemic we had to move away from in person monthly sessions and plant tours to virtual sessions. These virtual sessions as well as daily email info exchanges played a vital role in getting local manufacturers the info they needed to make correct decisions around keeping there people safe, staying up to date with government regulations and keeping production going.

The majority of SW Ontario Manufacturers have rebounded from any initial slowdowns caused by the pandemic. Fourth quarter business is better than most expected, beyond many expectations and even a record quarter for some companies. Finding people, finding staff is again the most pressing issue for the sector in SW Ontario. Lots of growing and hiring going on, particularly in the Food/Bev sector & Automotive. The news of heavy investments by Chrysler, Ford & GM into the SW Ontario Automotive sector in the coming years gives great reason for optimism, as well as Maple Leaf Foods opening their new facility in the Region which will employ 1000’s.

The SW Ontario Consortium of EMC continued to grow, welcoming 20 new members to the Consortium. Manufacturers from Woodstock to Windsor make the SW Ontario Consortium of EMC the largest group of local manufacturers working together to help each other continuously improve anywhere in North America! Thank you to all the members who actively participate, share experiences, best practices & benchmark with others. I certainly don’t know all the answers to the questions that are brought up, but the other manufactures in the region do! The level of activity in this region is really wonderful to see and I thank you for that…

We will continue to address the relevant needs of the sector in 2021. Hopefully at some point being able to go back to live sessions with Plant Tours. We have all the resources we need right here in SW Ontario to address anything that comes up. Continuing to work together will ensure manufacturing in SW Ontario remains the largest single driver of our economy.

Thank you! Happy Holidays!
