Mental Health First Aid Training

Mental health issues in the workplace can affect performance, due to problems with concentration, memory, decision-making and motivation.  While some people with mental health issues manage without impact on their work performance, others may require short-term or ongoing workplace support.  For some people living with a mental health problem, being at work in a supportive environment can assist recovery.

In a recent major Canadian study, 82% of responding organizations ranked mental health conditions in their top three causes of short-term disability
(72% for long-term).

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.  Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved.

Training in MHFA will give you the knowledge and confidence to:

  • Recognize a change in behaviour
  • Respond with a confident conversation
  • Guide to appropriate resources and support

Statistics show that 30% of all short and long term disability claims are due to mental health problems and illnesses.  Time away from work of course results in lost revenue.

Investing time and effort to retain an experienced and skilled employee with a mental health problem is usually more cost-effective than recruiting and training a new person.  When an employee is showing possible indicators of a mental health problem, Mental Health First Aid can help them return to their usual performance quickly.

The average responding organization reported spending more than $10.5 million annually on absence claims.

Employers who set a strategic direction for improving mental health are rewarded with dramatic cost and effectiveness benefits and enjoying significant and sustainable enhancements.  A mentally healthy workplace exhibits higher levels of employee motivation, commitment, innovation as well as better decision making and improved planning.  Top candidates today are looking for a workplace that supports their personal and professional growth.
