Abbott Named Sustainability Leader of the Year (2013) by Best Ottawa Business Awards. Award recognizes Abbott’s commitment to sustainability and global citizenship at the company's Point of Care facility in Ottawa.
The sustainability initiatives at Abbott’s Ottawa manufacturing facility focus on three environmental priorities: addressing climate change, reducing water usage and responsible product stewardship. These translate into a wide variety of continuous process improvements and sustainable practices such as water recycling and use reduction; green procurement and maintenance; waste recycling and diversion; more viable energy use, including a solar-powered pond aerator, wind-powered exterior lighting and a green roof; reducing carbon emissions; and enhancements of local wildlife habitats. "The culture at Abbott’s Point of Care facility is driven by a strong sense of engagement on corporate responsibility and citizenship activities that create healthier communities. Receiving the Sustainability Leader of the Year award is a testament to our ongoing efforts and leadership in helping to create a healthier Ottawa," said Sean Tomalty, Abbott Point of Care Plant Director in Ottawa. "Through our ongoing initiatives, we have been able to make significant progress in reducing overall emissions, water use and waste." To date, Abbott’s sustainability successes at the Point of Care facility include:
- Mounting a wind turbine that powers parking lot lighting
- An onsite Shoreline Restoration Project with community partners, designed to protect biodiversity
- Planting more than 2,100 bare-root and 690 potted native trees and shrubs on the facility’s property
- Sponsorship of two outdoor active living programs to enhance conservation areas
- Water recycling and use reduction
- Energy use and carbon emission reduction
- Waste recycling and alternatives to using a landfill
- Green procurement training for Abbott buyers
- Green cleaning and maintenance practices
- Installing birdhouses, fish habitats and a turtle nesting habitat
These initiatives are aimed at helping the Ottawa-based manufacturing facility meet its goal of a 25 percent water use reduction by 2014, along with a 15 percent reduction goal in direct emissions and purchased electricity by 2015.
