Graduate students from the Sobey School of Business (Saint Mary's University) eager to learn about opportunities in manufacturing visit the area and tour numerous sites and discuss business with those in business
An event organized by SMU and assisted by EMC and numerous community partners went off wonderfully with van loads of bright, educated and enthusiastic students visiting member manufacturers in the region. Not only did the students get to learn about these operations, the businesses also got to meet some strong candidates for future employment. It is not a secret that the demographics in NS indicate a steady ‘baby boom’ drain on the work force as well the increased demand for highly skilled employees is recognized as an obstacle we all will be facing. These students with training in business, finance, innovation etc. come not only with an education but many of them, who came from abroad to study, offer a wealth of world knowledge that will benefit their future employers.
EMC member companies RPS Composites, Highliner Fine Foods, Stelia North America and ABCO Industries joined Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. in welcoming the tour.
The students were all impressed with diversity of products made in the area as well as the global nature of the industries. I think they were quite surprised in fact. After presentations and tours, the groups offered some well thought out questions to their hosts and it was clear that many had done their homework before the visits.
The busy day ended with an evening reception / meet and greet which included lots of conversations and a great presentation by Dr. Bill Smith of Neck Tronics who has benefitted greatly from meeting Anu Gupta a student from the Sobey School of Business. They both had fantastic and emotional testimonials about the gains they have both made as a result of working together.
Thanks to Karn and the gang at SMU for allowing us the pleasure of helping with this and thanks to the local manufacturers who took the time and showed the interest to meet these great young people.
