Another exciting SIG event in Kitchener in April - Automation in Manufacturing!
On April 24, 2018, nearly 30 EMC members met at OTTO Motors, a division of Clearpath, in Kitchener for a SIG event that focused on Automation in Manufacturing. The presentation, introduced by our host, provided up-to-date and detailed information about Industry 4.0. Some of the primary contexts of Industry 4.0 include:
- Big data
- Smart factory
- Vertical networks
- Internet of things (IoT)
- Cyber physical systems
In short, interconnected industrial equipment, such as OTTO self driving vehicles, provide centralized operational data that can drive continuous improvement most effectively. That data provides real-time, accurate, and intensive information that focuses efforts in the areas that will truly have the greatest impact to the manufacturing process. It reduces non-value added activities, which ultimately reduces waste of inventory, waste of motion, and waste of raw materials and finished products. According to Concordia University, in a typical manufacturing facility, material handling accounts for 30-70% of the total cost of manufacture.
In response to this focused data, automation provides a Smart factory solution, ensuring flexibility, adaptability, and lean processes.
The members who attended this event were fortunate enough to tour the OTTO Motors/Clearpath facility, where they observed OTTO automated self-driving vehicles in action. There was a high level of interest amongst the group – there will, most certainly, be more exploration and discussion about this topic in the future. We hope you can be a part of that robust conversation regarding automation in today’s manufacturing world!
