EMC: Eastern Ontario Consortia Year in Review!

By Gay Henniger

Where did 2010 go? I thought it was just me but others are assuring me that this year just flew by! Many member plants that have been challenged by the economy will be glad to see 2010 behind them and are looking to 2011 for hope of some type of return to “normal”. Looking back over 2010 there have been many positive events in our area and we are proud of all of the hard work of many of our members in preparing their plants and workforces so that they can “soar” once their markets improve.

Perth/Smith Falls/Carleton Place Consortium members met recently at OMYA to share best practices surrounding lean/continuous improvement. OMYA has made great strides to bring change to their building to capturing efficiencies and increasing productivity. After many failed attempts to gain buy-in for change from a very unyielding workforce culture, the management team decided to forge ahead and introduce a slow culture change as new programs for continuous improvement were implemented.

Jennifer McGillis, ERGO Inc. joined members recently at Berry Plastics in Belleville to discuss ergonomic strategies that with physical challenges as a direct result of an increasing number of aging employees. One plant present noted that over the next six years, there will be a complete turnover of their 150 employees, as a result of retirement. Meanwhile these workers have been doing their jobs (not necessarily the best way) for many years and without ergonomic consideration to job tasks.
