This initial Supervisors SIG was a resounding success. Six supervisors from two Ottawa Valley plants met at Times Fiber in Renfrew to discuss challenges and issues connected to their roles as Supervisors. By the end of this session, this group was amazed to discover the commonality of the issues they face each day and they felt that meeting again in the near future would help them to work out some solutions to a couple of issues that stood out in discussions. A very comprehensive plant tour was provided
The reasons supervisors attended was to learn about other member plants, talk about how others are dealing with "change" and see how others are handling people-related issues such as motivation, discipline, training, and communication.
After generating and discussing a list of challenges that these supervisors deal with daily, two themes came forward that this group felt they would like to discuss in future:
- Employee Morale (in times of downsizing, media talk re: recession, layoffs, increased workload, resistance to change, etc.)
- Balancing Resources (workload, how to ensure compliance (quality/H&S, etc) with fewer workers to carry the load, CI?Lean initiatives etc.)
Attendees noted that Supervisors are under increasing pressure due to wearing more hats, due dilligence legislations and expectations of their role in encouraging people in the change process.
- Would like to gain involvement of other EMC member plants in a future Supervisor SIG
- Supervisors that attended would like to meet together (sooner rather than later) if their managers approve.
