New Brunswick & PEI

Several companies from across PEI recently attended a networking event at Cavendish Farms in New Annan to discuss a topic that is common to all facilities. Without exception, companies are challenged with having all employees in the facility follow he Health & Safety rules. Because we understand the risk for both employee and employer if the guidelines are not followed, it can become necessary to change behaviors through progressive discipline.

Snow Fatigue - is That a Real Thing??

By Joan Richard

Here in Atlantic Canada we have about had our fill of snow. Interestingly enough, it hasn't been a long winter and we had counted ourselves lucky...we figured we had 'dodged the winter bullet' this year. That is until February hit...and so did the snow. For the second day this week alone, businesses, schools, transit and even major roads, are closed. We know the impact this can have on production schedules and delivery commitments but how does it effect people?

As Manufacturing is a world of constant and necessary change, leaders are challenged with the effectiveness of ‘solutions’ that they feel will benefit their businesses. Stewart Pollard, Director of Organizational Development for JDI has worked through various solutions in his career and has come to draw certain conclusions and perspective which he shared with our group.

Over the past several months there has been an increasing demand for an event that brings peers together to discuss food quality and safety. Although we are 'all inclusive' in our activity, we have the ability and the willingness to do this type of special sector specific event. As in every event, the goal is to invite people together to discuss a topic of interest or challenge so that information can be shared and peer relationships developed

With the support of Post-Secondary Education and the Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium, Greater Moncton Manufacturers are all settled in to the first round of Funded Cluster training which has been designed by local manufacturers. These first three classes of employees from various companies are participating in the ‘Foundational Skills for Manufacturing Supervisors’ program which runs four hours per week over ten weeks. As I make every effort to inform companies about this opportunity I get the ‘look’, the one that says ‘it’s just too good to be true…what’s the catch?’ The ‘catch’ is: to receive the value, you simply have to want to participate!

Through my time with EMC and in Industry I have continuously looked for that one statement, exposure or experience that can create a different perspective. During a recent round of information sessions with Chad Metcalf, President of Value Stream Solutions, there were a couple of those ‘light bulb’ moments but the one that stood out as we talked about identifying organizational waste was: the goal is to create the shortest time possible between ‘money out’ and ‘money in’.

Have you ever heard a company say ‘We did Lean a bit back but it didn’t work’ or some other initiative that they felt was not successful. I might suggest that those efforts were not failures but an important (possibly even necessary) part of the learning and evolution within the organization towards being the best that they can be….Continuous Improvement!

Key Performance Indicators: Sounds Easy?

By Joan Richard

To have a system of measurements throughout an organization that align with the overall goal and provide easy visual information as to how you’re doing makes perfect sense. Why isn’t everyone doing it…..maybe it’s not as easy as it sounds.

Through a partnership between the Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium and the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labor we are pleased to be moving forward with the first customized cluster training event.

Same Topic – Different Information!

By Joan Richard

It was a pleasure once again to visit with the folks at Sabian Cymbal as they welcomed manufacturers from around the province to participate in Session #2 in our series of discussions on “Our Current State of Continuous Improvement”. Through these events, I am reminded regularly that “you don’t know what you don’t know” and the learning and bench marking opportunities are endless.
