In an ever-growing global marketplace, our ongoing initiatives to become more competitive and efficient cause companies to search for creative means to meet production targets that satisfy customers’ needs while maintaining quality and food safety excellence. This Special Event, Hosted by The Original Cakerie in London, focused on their particular journey to increase efficiencies and for many, it was an inspiring story followed by a fabulous plant tour.

When a company connects to share experiences and processes related to Food Safety with continuous improvement in mind, there is bound to be learning opportunities. Such was the case at our EMC GF2 Food, Beverage, Bio and Ag Sector Event hosted by Burnbrae Farms in the Village of Lyn, Ontario in November.

October is Global Ergonomics Month and in general, a month that really highlights our Manufacturing Sector. As such, it was the perfect time to connect with others in industry to share experiences and opportunities for improvement all with enhancing existing ergonomics programs in mind.

One of the biggest, if not the biggest, challenges facing Processors in the Food and Beverage Industry today is the attraction and retention of good talent. It’s a subject matter that brings companies of all sizes and aspects of industry (including service providers and Government partners) together. Regardless of the Sector, an aging population, a multi-generational workforce, and a lack of students embracing a potential career in Manufacturing in general, are all factors lending to the difficulties companies are experiencing in hiring and retaining good people.

If you are on the road as much I am, you know that there are really two seasons – winter time and, of course, construction time. One could almost liken it easily enough to our business cycles as well - full speed production and of course summer and winter shutdowns. After 100’s of thousands of miles (yes hundreds) trekking back and forth across the Province visiting Processors from so many facets of industry, I have come to appreciate my silent solidarity with those big rigs that continuously deliver every imaginable product from raw materials to finished goods in our Province, in Canada, and around the world.

Food Beverage Ontario (FBO) launched a wonderful opportunity earlier this year to foster career interest in the food and beverage industry. The contest was open to students across the Province and focused on the development of new products or improvement. This was a very exciting initiative! On behalf of EMC, our heartiest congratulations to FBO and to this year's winners!
