Exploring opportunities to learn about Purchasing as a profit centre and the importance of good Supplier Relationships.
Just a few weeksago, I was delighted to have participated in a Lean PurchasingCourse. It was an excellent opportunity to drill down on thiscentre and to take a “Lean Perspective” if you will onhow to look for savings opportunities when it comes to Purchasingin general.
Focusing onmaking this a profit centre versus a cost centre meant looking innon-traditional areas beyond the manufacturing floor for savingsand keeping an open mind that those opportunities can be found inevery corner of the organization. Moving that one step forward andtaking a lean perspective and applying the principles of wasteagainst our traditional purchasing procedures could garner someinteresting results.
The coursefocused on Value Chains, Supply Chain Management, Lean Thinking,Strategic Management, Purchasing as a Profit Center and then, asmentioned above, looking at Strategies for Lean Purchasing ingeneral.
At the endof the day, beyond everything else, this particular Eventunderlined the importance of collaboration and partnerships and thenecessity of working together to remain competitive. Of equalimportance especially in today’s economic climate is takingthe opportunity to apply and plan for any contingency and to feelcomfortable when it comes to actual product costing.
There aremany good articles relating to Supplier and Customer Relationshipsand Purchasing Strategies in general and one that I foundinteresting was published by Grant Thornton in a special segmententitled “Fast Facts on Food Processing”… DexterManning and Steve Lyman, Partners, Grant Thornton, explore theeffects of rising pricing and the importance of establishing goodsupplier relationships.
