On October 1st 2012, EMC Member Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Brands will be closing its Peterborough plant after 40 years in business. As a result, 80 very skilled and motivated manufacturing employees are searching for new employment opportunities. Many of you may be familiar with the Baskin Robbins ice cream product line and retail shops. As a bit of background on the organization, there is more than 16,000 points of distribution in 56 countries worldwide, Dunkin' Brands Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: DNKN), is the world's leading franchisor of quick service restaurants (QSR) serving hot and cold coffee and baked goods, as well as hard-serve ice cream. At the end of 2010, Dunkin' Brands' nearly 100 percent franchised business model included 9,760 Dunkin' Donuts restaurants and 6,433 Baskin-Robbins restaurants, and the company had system-wide sales of approximately $7.7 billion. The Baskin Robbins Peterborough plant is Dunkin Brands only wholly owned manufacturing facility. This facility produces ice cream not only for domestic franchisees but also for international licensees. It ships ice cream to over 50 countries. This plant is integrated in that it manages all aspects of the order from supply chain planning to order intake to production and logistics to a customer here in Canada or internationally. The facility incorporates almost all major dairy plant operations including pasteurization, compression room operations (ammonia room), ice cream production, blast freezer and cold storage operations. There is also a quality lab that tests mixes and ice cream.
This plant employs a total of 80 employees all of which are impacted by the closure. Management is working very closely with a Coaching Team to assist in transition and job placement. Candidates represent all plant functions from Operations, Quality, Maintenance, Purchasing, Shipping Receiving, General Utility, Flavouring, Labelling, IT and the General Office with experience ranging up to 25 years.
Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Brands is a HACCP Certified facility and has held annual training for everyone on HACCP, GMP's, Allergens, Health and Hygiene and Sanitation. In addition, all Staff have been trained on Lean Manufacturing including tools such as single point lessons, mistake proofing, TPM, OEE and 5-S, etc.
