Celebrating milestones of EMC Members affords us the opportunity to reflect on a number of incredible achievements and to offer our heartiest congratulations on behalf of our Team, countless Community Partners and all of our Members across Canada! This month we are particularly pleased to pay tribute to Kisko Products in Woodbridge who are celebrating 40 years in business in 2017!
Kisko is a proud Canadian company and it seems fitting to be honouring them at a time when Canada is celebrating so many wonderful attributes that make this Country a great place to live and do business in.
The company has an interesting history that begins in Jamaica. Leslie Josephs, an entrepreneur at heart, and his wife Glenor had a rather unique business there selling sno cones from the back of a truck. Leslie, sadly now passed, was somewhat of a visionary and could imagine other opportunities with his product. Ultimately, their journey would bring them, along with their five children, to Canada on Christmas Eve in 1975. Two years later in 1977, Kisko Products was formed and Leslie worked hard to see his plans for production of iced freeze pops turn into reality.
Today they are proudly Canada’s largest manufacturer of freeze pops operating from a 115,000 square foot facility centrally located in Woodbridge, Ontario. As I write this, it is the hottest week of the year so far and with summer now at hand and many more weeks to follow, Kisko will meet the challenge of keeping Canadian consumer’s cool by producing almost 335 million freezies and employing over 200 people during peak season. Supplementing our “freezie” needs here at home, they also export to US Markets, throughout the Caribbean, Jamaica, and Korea.
The company has seen amazing success over the years particularly when one sits back and takes a moment to truly consider all of the changes that have taken place throughout four decades of manufacturing and how our businesses have adapted - in globalization, technology, customer and supplier demands, legislative issues, increasing cost pressures, continuous improvement developments, machine efficiencies, soaring electrical rates, leadership dynamics, workforce changes, millennials and baby boomer adjustments, job security, employer responsibilities, and training for success from classroom to online capabilities… I think it would be safe to say, that it takes commitment, persistence, solid relationships, strong values and a good deal of resolve to sustain a business through any number of changes over forty years!
Leslie and his wife Glenor were very engaged with all aspects of their business building long-lasting relationships with suppliers, customers and their workforce. With a legacy of experience and guidance and a solid business foundation, sons Mark, Randy and Peter continue to grow the business, developing new opportunities and market share. They are proud of their past and of their strategy for growth. They are also very
dedicated to organizations that improve the lives and development of children giving back as often as they can. Kisko Products has been an active EMC Member hosting events and always warmly welcoming fellow processors to explore respective journey’s. The Team here has openly shared best practices regarding reward and recognition programs an essential component in our attraction and retention strategies today and they were the first of our companies to share information on their journey embracing technology to go paperless. Perhaps my personal favourite though, was having Mark join us to speak on their experiences when it came to Business Growth and Building Competitiveness in the Food Sector back in 2013.
I remember Mark commenting to the audience at hand that day that growth does not come easy, but through good leadership and guidance, they have developed a close knit, dedicated and creative team that pulls together to constantly innovate and improve. He shared his thoughts on their success then and plans for the future and it has been a pleasure watching them grow.
This Fall they will be hosting once again and the topic will be on Musculoskeletal Disorders and Ergonomics. Mark your calendars for October 19th, 2017, come meet the Team behind the company name and join in on discussion and roundtable networking with your peers.
In summary, we believe Industry is very fortunate to have such wonderful companies such as Kisko Products telling their story, not only sharing what is working well but reminding us too of the occasional hurdle we may encounter in reaching our goals! Mark, Randy and Members of the Kisko Team are often attending industry events and engaging in matters of interest for the company and for the Sector enabling them to continue producing their product efficiently and safely to meet growing consumer demands.
Please join us as we congratulate Mark, Randy, Peter and Glenor and the entire Team at Kisko Products on 40 years of successful business!
All the best as always!
