When Cavendish Farms purchased the Omstead Coated Appetizer business in 2009, there were significant reductions in resources through the preceding year as other business divisions were sold off and wound down, including all of the dedicated health and safety staff.  The challenge in front of Management then was to build a new and effective safety management system from the ground up - without any additional resources.  Over the next two years a structured system was implemented that involved all levels of management which began working to identify and improve on areas of opportunity using a methodical approach.  The results were phenomenal and most importantly included an acceptance of ownership for safety at all levels of the organization. This past year demonstrated the best safety results in the organization's history with a Recordable Incident Rate (RIR) of 0.000 and over 850 days without a single lost time incident (LTI)!
