As a business partner within the community, Mohawk College recognizes the importance of generating an increased number of skilled professionals. It is clear that the Greater Golden Horseshoe is entering an economic renaissance; continuing its growth directly depends on having the number of trained professionals required to sustain the economy. As a result, Mohawk College has engaged in the Inspiring Opportunity Campaign. Its focus is addressing the labour shortage. As part of the campaign's initiatives, major renovations have started to transform the Stoney Creek campus into the Mohawk Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Research, Resources and Training Institute (STARRT).
This new cutting edge facility will increase enrollment in skilled trades programs, increasing the number of skilled professionals able to enter the workforce. With 88,000 square feet of additional working space, students will have access to a hands on learning environment. The new facility will stress the importance of skilled trades in the community, providing students with programs such as building and construction, chemical and environmental technology, mechanical and industrial technology, and trucking and automotive mechanics
