Windsor Essex EMC Consortium 2011…A Year in Review

As we approach the end of 2011, The Windsor Essex Manufacturing Community continues to rise out of the last few years of adversity. For the consortium members, there is a real enthusiasm and a commitment to accelerate their efforts to strengthen the core characteristics that make this region unique.

The economy in Windsor-Essex region has historically been dominated by the automotive manufacturing and the Tool, Die & Mold sector. This year we have seen more diversification with a variety of non-automotive and industrial manufacturing firms moving into the region, and this has started to have an impact on Benchmarking activities.  As a result, the consortium members in the area have opened up to the idea that it is through best practise sharing and learning from each other that they will gain strength once again.

The manufacturers in the region continuously strive to improve by setting goals and targets.  While achieving goals may indicate improvement and greater profitability, gauging such progress against peers also is beneficial. Comparing internal results with others can intensify an organization's commitment to improvement and encourage a more critical review of existing processes.

There are still changes taking place in the sector that are redefining the scope and scale of the entire manufacturing landscape and the activities inside of the Strategic Interest Group Sessions this year.  Topics ranged from a specific focus on NEER reporting with the manufacturers starting to take a look at a common approach to interpretation of WSIB language and policy, through Communication Strategies for noisy production environments, right through to our latest SIG topic, Border Crossing Issues between Canada & US.

What continues to be fascinating is the range of discussions that come from the topics and themes developed by manufacturers in the region.  Even though we are guided by the theme for the sessions, the attendees have the opportunity to really tap into some sensitive issues and leave the events with new perspectives and potential contacts for support.

Even though the consortium is new, it is growing and developing its own unique character and culture and the excitement for 2012 continues to build as we welcome new members.
