A brief look back at 2011 and a wish for a prosperous 2012 from EMC...
2011 was truly a mix of the good, the bad and the ugly... the Royal wedding with all its fluff, the ongoing Euro crisis, and who could forget the Japanese disaster?
It was also an interesting year to be a Nova Scotian, Brad Marchand helped my Bruins to hoist the Stanley Cup, New Page and Bowater showed us all that even the biggest can struggle and Halifax had its future "adjusted" to the tune of $29 billion (with a B) with the award of the Maritime Defence contract.
EMC also had an interesting year in Nova Scotia. We added a few new members, got reacquainted with some old members and had a lot of successful events across the province.
If you looked at our events this year like a "connect the dots" picture the image that would emerge would clearly have a human capital theme. Members are concerned about where their future employees are coming from, how to keep them safe, how to properly engage them, how to put systems in place so they can be more effective, how to encourage them to stay well, and how to work with them to ensure we are doing what we do in a sustainable way. This theme is also evident in topics members are suggesting for events next year.
Special thanks go out to all of our hosts in 2011, your willingness to help your local consortium is appreciated and we hope, as a host, you learned a bit about your organization and benefited from having your peers visit your facility. 2012 is just around the corner and I encourage everyone to volunteer as a host, it's easy and enjoyable. Also, thanks go out to our community partners at the local RDA offices, the Govenment departments and our outside experts who have helped to enlighten our members by sharing their expertise when asked.
As a wrap up I must say I enjoyed the year, took great pleasure from being involved with everyone and seeing the fantastic things you do. Not to sound like an ad on TV it truly is a great time to be a Nova Scotian! Let's work together to make 2012 an even better and successful year....
I hope that everyone relaxes over the Holidays and has the pleasure of being with family and friends; this is a special time of year that gives us a chance to pay attention to those we care about, enjoy!
Thanks again to our 2011 hosts, you are the greatest!
