Hawkesbury members and the Prescott/Russell Entrepreneurship Center (CFDC) hosted the first SIG presentation in French for supervisors, managers and community partners for whom French is their first language. Geordie Raine and Maxime Labbe, Montana led a very enthusiastic group through the key steps of the Turnaround Interview® model.

The Turnaround Interview® is defined as a systematic approach to a behaviour-changing conversation.  As noted in the presentation (both English and French version can be found on the Cornwall/United Counties/Hawkesbury website) this habit-breaking tool can be used when:

  1. An employee behaviour is causing problems
  2. When immediate discipline is not needed
  3. When the behaviour has already been discussed casually with the employee
  4. When the behaviour persists despite this discussion

Networking opportunities through your EMC membership take many shapes and forms! A new member orientation with your local Field Service Advisor will help you to sort through our many programs and tools available to you and your team! The Strategic Interest Group (SIG) events are first to come to mind. This venue provides a confidential, safe environment to share challenges and successes with other like-minded networkers – to learn from each other.

Other "tools" available include the weekly "Members Need Help" questions and database resources, discussion forums, WIKI, conferences, workshops, shared training and more.  However don't forget to ask your field Service Advisor if it is possible to connect directly with another member plant that would be willing to share a tour or even a phone call with you or your team in order to learn more about their approach to a specific tool.

Recently, Eastern Ontario's new member the Royal Canadian…

During plant visits over the summer, discussion with member contacts uncovered a common challenge that all member plants were facing. Despite the plant closures and downsizing in the region, there is an increasing challenge with finding employees with the right skills – either professional, skilled trades or general labour.

To begin discussion around this challenge, the October SIG brought together information from three different sources that could help to meet some of the need.  One of the Community Partners that took part in this SIG was referred by one of our member plants.

Employment Services Centre of Prescott-Russell: Chantale Ladouceur, Human Resources Business Partner

Chantale's presentation can be found on the UC/Cornwall/Hawkesbury website under "Resources".  http://www.emccanada.org/membersonl/ontario…

At a recent SIG at American Standard, Cornwall, the United Counties (SDG), Cornwall and Hawkesbury Consortium members took the lead from the Brockville and Ottawa Valley Consortia in tackling a Best Practices format to share recent Lean/Culture Change and Continuous Improvement strategies with each other. Host American Standard led the discussion by outlining the history of their plant, their safety program, their communication tools, operations focus, challenges and lean philosophy.

Chris MacFarlane gave a brief outline of the changes they have seen in their facility since American Standard purchased this plant in 1999. By 2002 eighty unionized employees were producing 80 units per day (Bathtubs).  Eight years later while focusing on a higher margin product, forty seven employees are producing 252 units per day.  How did they get to this level of productivity?  A copy of Chris's presentation can be found on the United Counties/Cornwall/Hawkesbury member's webpage.

The Winchester Parmalat Cold Storage Plant was packed with members and guests interested in learning about Supply Chain Management. Ross Cooper, gave an informative overview and introduced Lorraine Chambers, Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council who outlined the role of their organization. Ian McFall and John Esford of Burnbrae Farms, an EMC member plant in Lyn, Ontario, provided a comprehensive presentation of their company and its progressive supply chain management program.

Overview of Supply Chain Management

Ross Cooper, Manager of EMC Value Added Projects noted that prior to the introduction of the concept of Supply Chain Management, the functions in a manufacturing plant were very much segregated.  Each function worked in silos - independent of one another.  More recently managers have begun to look at the supply chain (supplier to customer) as a whole, though purchasing was still often left on its own.  The challenge with this type of system is that buying…
