Utilize your Business Systems to capture your SR&ED-eligible Activities

Many manufacturers use software applications to capture hours attributable to projects. A good SR&ED consultant will ensure your programs are "SR&ED-friendly" by assisting with modifications to enable your system to capture data for all eligible time and materials. This service, coupled with ongoing education, will ensure that none of your eligible activities are missed, and initiate the transition to a culture of innovation within your company.

For firms that do not have a means of tracking SR&ED-eligible expenses, simple, customized tracking methods are often required. The system must be very easy to use, and need not require a lot of time to update and maintain. Complimenting the tracking of eligible projects by posting them on large communication boards is another way to shift your culture towards "the innovative".

Several companies have increased the value of their SR&ED claims is by incentivizing personnel integral to their innovations. Engineers, Technologists, Programmers, Tool Designers, Maintenance Personnel and Toolmakers are good examples of individuals who perform developmental work. Utilizing the majority of their time towards innovation (and incentivizing them to do so) goes a long way when maximizing SR&ED claim potential.

In closing, I just wanted to say that we continue to have a lot of success improving SR&ED results for our clients. As an example:

For a Metal Processing Company with 28 Employees:

Their previous claim with another consultant was $69K

The first year we worked with them we prepared a claim for $247K (which was accepted as filed)

The second year we prepared and submitted a claim for $317K on their behalf
