SR&ED Insight Related to Your Eligibility

Some examples of SR&ED-eligible activities that you may not have considered, and how to ensure they qualify.

Canadian-owned manufacturers are entitled to tax credtis and refunds totaling up to 72.7 percent of the labour costs associated with their SR&ED-eligible projects. And foreign-owned manufacturers in Canada are eligible for up to 39.4 percent of these same costs as a tax credit. With this in mind , I am often asked "so just what projects do qualify?"

The obvious ones we always talk about are trials to develop products and iimprove products or process capability. But you must also coinsider cost overruns due to unexpected technical problems, trial and error testing, test equpment development and refinement, and technical projects that didn't go as well as planned. In addition there are actitivites carried on by your maintenance and technical support personnel related to your improvement activities. The list is long, and you will find many examples in the recent IMIN/EMC SR&ED Blog Articles.

In order for projects to qualify for SR&ED the developed solutions cannot be trivial. Activities must be performed or supervised by qualified personnel, and the outcome must reflect an advancement in technology and it must be achieved through systemic investigation (as those who file for SR&ED know all too well). Projects must also be related to your business context and you must have the "right" to exploit the technology.
