We all grew up thinking carrots were the food for great vision. If your eyes are a concern for you, then green is the way to go.

web-kale.jpgCarrots are great raw foods, but if you're looking to keep your eyes healthy it is actually the dark green, lutein-rich foods that will help slow macular degeneration;  kale, collards and swiss chard.  Coming in a close second are fatty fishes such as sardines, herring and mackerel.

If these dark leafy greens are new to you they can taste quite bitter.  The best way to try them for the first time is to boil them in a small amount of water until they are limp.  Then try tossing it with a…

We easily connect aerobic activity and high fibre/low fat eating with heart health. Keeping yourself hydrated also has a clear link to reducing your risk of heart attack.

This time of year, it can be easy to forget about the importance of drinking water.  With all of the tempting flavoured coffees that are constantly promoted in February, drinking water can go by the way side in favour of something warm and sweet.

We all easily acknowledge that water is good for your skin, joint health, muscular performance, and appetite control.  Our bodies are made of 60% water, so when your water intake is low all of the body's systems are adversely affected.  Blood is 80%…

Getting employees to participate in a health risk assessment can be a delicate task.

In December when NGF launched their Employee Wellness Program with us, we began the program with the Personal Wellness Profile (a.k.a. HRA)  By allowing staff paid time, and the facilities and support staff to assist them in this task, they were able to achieve the incredible rate of 97% participation!  Fantastic!  It also speaks to the relationship that they have with their employees as clearly there was already an established trust and strong sense of team that allowed us to work with so many…

In February, the Ministry of Labour will be conducting a month-long blitz on musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the workplace. The MSD blitz will concentrate on manual material handling, especially in the industrial, construction, mining, and health care sectors.

If you have a visit from the Ministry this is what you can expect:

The inspector will likley perform an administrative review including looking at how your workplace lives up to its roles under the Internal Responsibility System, your MSD injury statistics, your JHSC minutes, your written procedures and training on MSD hazards, and workplace controls that you have implemented or they feel should be implemented.

The last blitz they identified and wrote orders for manual lifting hazards,…

Due to the fact that all answers to the feedback survey are submitted anonymously, answers to the questions that were under "comment" sections, have been addressed here.

  1. If you registered for the webinar after the handouts were emailed, or if a firewall blocks all mass emails, then you didn't receive the handout.  It has been attached here.
  2. The webinar was not recorded, but a PDF version has been attached here.
  3. Thanks for the heads up on the audio connection.  In future webinars, I will be sure to eliminate all animations to improve the sound quality.
  4. Yes!  We can absolutely arrange a webinar specifically for your company at a time and date of your…

With a new year comes an opportunity to reflect on how we would like to live our lives. What changes we'd like to make, what improvements we'd like to see. Choosing a new direction can be exciting for some and overwhelming for others.

During this webinar, we'll explore how to decide and recognize what is a good next step for you.  Being able to choose a new path or even a slightly different direction can be straight forward and simple.  In fact, one small decision and a plan of how to implement that change can become a new skill that helps you in many areas of life.  So many things can seem like a good idea or something we "should" be doing.  But what you feel you "should" do and what you want to do, can be two very…

Recently the Ministry of Labour has included Medical Surveillance in their inspections. As a result, we have been getting many calls asking for help in understanding the requirements and implementing programs. Employers are beginning to think about their risks relating to employee health. I will be speaking on this topic at the SIG in Mississauga on Tuesday December 13.

The following is a list of risks to employers relating to employee health:

  • WSIB Costs -- the importance of managing return to work cases effectively
  • Medical Benefits Costs -- the impact of unhealthy employees on benefits premiums
  • MOL Orders and Fine -- Compliance orders and fines can be avoided by being prepared
  • Hiring At-Risk Employees -- Are your new hires physically capable of performing the required work functions? Are they bringing conditions that may result in future claims?
  • Worker…

I really enjoyed the webinar "Better Health are you ready".  It really hit home.  January seems to be the time to start fresh, and the message was clear that small changes in lifestyle, can positively impact our health overall.  I plan to stop worrying about what may happen, and start working toward what can happen!!
