Nov 25 was the date of the final Owen Sound Region SIG Events for 2009! What a year of challenges for manufacturers and Tenneco was not immune to the economic down-turn earlier this year. Today, however, all employees are back to work and Tenneco is looking at hiring another 60 more. The HR session included guest Susan Shular from the Grey Bruce Health Unit presenting on Pandemic Planning, and the Continuous Improvement session involved a plant tour focusing on best practices followed by feedback to the hos

Human Resources: Members enjoyed a presentation by Susan Shular of GBHU on pandemic planning. This was an informal presentation that included round-table discussions on what various manufacturers are doing for preparedness. Members present shared varying degrees of preparedness and so gaps were shared with each other.

Susan's presentation is available on the Owen Sound Consortium page. If there are any questions regarding this session and the subject matter, please feel free to contact Susan directly at: sshular@publichealthgreybruce.on.ca

Continuous Improvement: Jim Ladd and his team at Tenneco hosted this session which provided an overview of Tenneco's business model, core competencies in ride control systems, and their adoption of the Toyota production system.

Following an overview of their Business Operating System metrics and tour of their "war room" where all processes have been laid out in two visual value stream maps, members ventured on a tour.

Members were asked to look for ideas to take away and also some constructive feedback for the host. Some of the discussion points touched on:

  • 5S sustainment
  • Kaizen strategies
  • H&S Ergonomic ideas
  • Employee motivation and engagement
  • Physical plant environment
  • Product flow
  • Work cell design
  • Aging workforce

As usual, Tenneco always provides some great take-aways for members. We wish Tenneco the best going forward and many thanks for hosting a great day of networking!
