Ottawa Valley EMC Members Have a Rare Opportunity to Tour the Atomic Energy Plant (AECL) in Chalk River
On May 10th 2012, Ottawa Valley EMC members joined in great numbers for the day-long event at the Chalk River Atomic Energy plant. AECL’s highly skilled employees enthusiastically delivered an informative agenda for the day which included principles for a strong nuclear safety culture, sharing of ideas and a site tour.
First, let me provide a short summary of AECL's Chalk River Laboratories (CRL). As stated on their website: "they are located in the Province of Ontario, 190 km northwest of Canada's national capital, Ottawa. The CRL site comprises 3,700 hectares (9,100 acres) along the Ottawa River." As you drive up to the main building on a 10km drive through the wilderness scenery, you are suddenly greeted with a small campus of buildings that hosts 2800(!) employees.
"The site has unique capabilities…

Driving accountability! First you need to define your Supervisor’s roles and responsibilities…
On March 8th 2012, the Ottawa Valley EMC members got together at Pillar5 Pharma inc. to discuss a gap analysis tool that helps define Supervisors roles and responsibilities.
First, I would like to thank Anne Graham and John Carkner at Pillar5 Pharma inc. for hosting this SIG event at their facility.
We began with a discussion of the essential factors composing the foundation of a great Supervisor. First and foremost, the Supervisor needs to know their roles and responsibilities. As their Manager, do you know their roles and responsibilities? Taking the time to define and understand the measurable tasks your Supervisors perform every day will allow the Manager to…

EMC: Controller & Finance Contacts hold First SIG Event in the Ottawa Valley
Whomever stated that all finance staff members are quiet and retiring? NOT SO! This Eastern Ontario FSA had to stop the networking in order to start the recent Financial Controllers SIG Event held in Arnprior. Though the topic chosen for this event was the adoption of new GAPP Standards, many other topics were discussed during dinner and a list of topics for future SIGs was generated.
NEW GAPP Standards
According to the CICA website, "Following extensive consultation with stakeholders, the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) adopted International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) as Canadian GAAP for publicly accountable enterprises (PAEs) and the Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) required government business enterprises (GBEs) to adopt IFRSs for fiscal years beginning on or after January 1, 2011.
Private enterprises were given the option to adopt IFRSs or the new…
EMC: Annual ESA/Case Law/OHSA Update + Social Networking Issues in Workplace
Andrew McCreary of the Ottawa office of Hicks Morley joined our Ottawa Valley EMC members for the first time in the training room at Beavers Dental (Danaher Corporation), Morrisburg for a lively presentation and discussion regarding the impact of legislative changes over the past year or two, new changes and those starting to show up on the radar. Issues regarding “Social Media in the Workplace” were also discussed and members shared their best practices re: managing this new tool.
Andrew's full presentation can be found on the Ottawa Valley member webpage. Points below reflect discussion and highlights.
Employment Standards Update
Bill 139 in force since Nov 6-09 - a number of protections for temp workers have been enacted
- These are workers assigned by placement agencies to your workplace
- The agency is the employer
- Changes regarding finder fee restrictions - agency can't charge finder fee if employee has been placed in your building for over 6 month period (may be…
EMC members in the Ottawa valley gathered at KI Pembroke October 14, 2010 to share their past year’s experience with each other regarding Lean, Continuous Improvement and Engagement strategies used to identify opportunities for efficiencies, increased productivity and improvement to profit margins. This Consortium has made this "once a year review" a priority and it is amazing to see results of these efforts.
Rudy Witlox, Controller, KI Pembroke started off the discussion with a presentation re: their efforts to introduce lean into their administration processes. Rudy's presentation is posted on the Ottawa valley Members webpage.
Rudy noted that most often Lean is considered as a set of tools to improve efficiency on the production floor. Management suspected that there was a great deal of waste in the office but identifying waste was not the only reason they decided to introduce lean to their…
Eaton Electrical and Pillar5 Pharma Share Best Practices in Talent Management & Succession Planning
Members of two Eastern Ontario EMC Consortia have truly embraced the EMC mission to share best practices and experience with each other. Anne Graham, HR Leader, Pillar5 Pharma, Arnprior, and Ed Reeves, Supply Chain Manager, Canada, Eaton Corporation, Perth both gave very comprehensive presentations and led extension discussion re: Succession Planning at a recent joint event (Ottawa Valley + Perth/Smiths Falls/Carleton Place Consortia)
Succession planning, as a Human Resources function, has been around for a very long time but few plants actually have Succession plans in place. So why is this topic coming up on the "hot topics" radar these days at EMC SIGs?
Here's what attendees at this event felt were the reasons behind the re-emergence of "Succession Planning":
- Expected Baby Boomer Retirements in drives over next 5-15 years (one EMC plant in Eastern Ontario is expecting a 100% management & production turnover over…
Last fall, Alain Mercier, VP of Operations, Glatfelter Gatineau and I were discussing their plant challenges and successes. Alain told me of a recent project to identify their Supervisor skills gaps (to pinpoint training for individuals and the group), I knew other EMC members would be interested in hearing their story. We needn't have been unsure as to how many members would travel across Ottawa and into another province to attend this SIG. When the topic is pertinent, “they will come”!
Supervisor SIGs have been running regularly in four of the six Eastern Ontario Consortia and the brain-stormed list of challenges with each have been very common - communication (to production employees and between management/supervisors), change management, employee engagement, establishing accountability, balancing resources while wearing many hats and TRAINING! Most Supervisors (or lead hands, team leaders, etc.) admit to being chosen for this position because of their success in operating…
