The SIG event held February 23 at the Ardagh Group in Blacks Harbour was well worth the drive for those who attended to hear about their effective problem solving method.
Our most recent event for EMC members in South East New Brunswick was focused on problem solving and more specifically how to do it in a more structured, measurable and effective way. The event took place in Blacks Harbour where our hosts have their plant imbedded in the Connors Brothers sardine plant.
After a trip around the table for introductions and catching up with each other the group received an update on the goings on at EMC both locally and nationally. Items of interest were the…
2011 was the year I had my eyes opened to what a diverse manufacturing industry we have here in the Maritimes. After 12 months of visiting with all of our members in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, I still can’t believe all the great facilities that call the Maritimes home that I did not know existed here.
This was a year of great accomplishments for our members. 2011 saw our members open new facilities, hire new employees and buy new equipment helping them become world class companies. As such, many of our members were presented prestigious awards throughout the year. Congratulations to everyone on their accomplishments!
Our SIG events were well attended and our members shared ideas and solutions on various Human Resource, Continuous Improvement, Production Processes and Health and Safety…
It was a morning full of information at DEW Engineering in Miramichi where members from all over New Brunswick met to learn more about controlling absenteeism in their plants. It is believed that the problem begins because some employees have a sense of entitlement to take time off and that “sick days” are simply extra vacation days.
Our guest speaker George Raine, of Montana Consulting, opened our event with a presentation called "Rethinking Attendance" where he discussed the steps to take to try to bring the number of absent days down to a reasonable level.
- Step 1 - Rethink the employment bargain. There is a qualified duty to show up that is exchanged for an offer of a paid position.
- Step 2 - Rethink your views of "consistency". It's Consistency of principle where you give every case the same analysis, but outcomes…
Throughout the year, we find that topics are brought forward that require a subject matter expert and certainly Alcohol and Drug Polices is one of them. We were fortunate enough to have Tim Kelly of Workplace Health Outcomes and Dr. John Quinn, Medical Review Officer, join us to help us better understand what a good alcohol and drug policy should look like.
To test or not to test is the question. In Canada, random drug testing of employees is rare and is almost never permissible. Currently the transportation industry has random testing where drivers travel across the border and into the United States and only recently has the Greater Toronto Transit Association, who is the 3rd largest transit operation in North American, announced they too would start random testing of their drivers.
When asked about what a good alcohol and drug policy looks…
Members from all over New Brunswick met at Clow Canada in Saint John to hear George Raine of Montana Consulting talk about discipline in our plants
The morning started with George explaining the differences in establishing discipline between union and non-union workplaces. In the non-union world, there is no basis to dispute the discipline unless it violates the law. In the union world, discipline must be for just cause and may be appealed to arbitration.
The best piece of advice, whether supervising in a non-union or union facility, always make notes either during or immediately after the interview and always keep the originals. Do not…
The 29th Annual Kent Region Entrepreneurial Gala Awards were presented on October 16th with one of our members winning one of the six awards.
Normand Caissie, of Imperial Manufacturing Group in Richibucto, was one of the six individuals recognized at the event. Mr. Caissie was presented with the Small/Medium Sized Business of the Year award.
Imperial Manufacturing Group's remarkable story began with Normand Caissie and four workers in 1979 toiling in a 6,400-square-foot sheet metal shop in the small community of Richibucto, New Brunswick. Throughout the years, IMG has acquired and absorbed 17 companies and now operates 10…

EMC Members across New Brunswick gathered at Systemair in Bouctouche on June 8th to learn more about sustainability, what it means and what other companies are doing.
Sustainability is the capacity to endure. The University of Guelph describes sustainability as "improving life for today while preserving resources for tomorrow" and the UN 's definition is "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability for future generations to meet their own needs".
EMC's own Environmental Engineer, Laura Rourke, described how sustainability now encompasses the economic, social and environmental performance of the…
On May 17th, Terry and Kathy Malley invited guests to join them to officially open their new manufacturing facility in the newly expanded Dieppe Industrial Park. The 90,000 square foot building is the first to be built on Aviation Avenue next to the Greater Moncton International Airport.
Over 500 guests, including Premier David Alward, attended the gala opening and congratulated the Malley family on the new facility.
"For the benefit of all of our staff, it was my dream to build a facility that was bright, clean and warm and not your typical manufacturing plant," said Terry Malley, President & CEO. "I think we accomplished that, and tonight I would like to dedicate this building to them."
Established in 1979, the company is a manufacturer and distributor of specialty…
