EMC Lunenburg/Queens Consortium
Chester member, GN Thermoforming, hosts an EMC SIG on a couple of topics that interest most manufacturers. Production Management and training are both vital components of any long range strategy if profitability is a part of your business plan.
After a trip around the table for introductions the group received an update on the goings on at EMC both locally and nationally. Items of interest were; news about the new Canadian Manufacturing Network, a review of the power of the Member Needs Help service on www.emccanada.org (see attached tutorials to get connected to MNH) and an update on the EMC Purchasing Coop.

The SIG event held at ABCO Industries in Lunenburg focused on the 65 year history of this iconic South Shore manufacturer and their adaptability and resourcefulness. The group also heard a presentation from a representative from IRAP on the new DTAPP program for manufacturers.
Meeting in what used to be the barracks of Camp Norway where the Norwegian Navy operated from after the Germans occupied their country in the Second World War was a fitting location for this event. Lunenburg, our meeting location and our hosts are all steeped in tradition and have a strong historical connection to life on the South Shore.

The event on January 17 included a Member Best Practice presentation on Employee Engagement and a Special Presentation by George Raine of Montana Consulting on his Turnaround Interview program.
Clearly getting the most from your staff is a big issue and a challenge for manufacturers. Working 'lean', expecting fewer people to do more work, while struggling to find the skills and 'can do' attitude in newer workers drew a huge crowd to the event.

EMC members from the South Shore and as far away as Oxford came together to discuss New Hire Orientation, Near Miss Accident Management, Wellness Programs and to hear about programs available for manufacturers from representatives from the local RDA
With so much to discuss it was like trying to fit a quart in a pint bottle at the recent SIG at AbitibiBowater just outside Bridgewater. Fourteen members came together to hear from our hosts on Orientation and near miss incidents as well as to discuss wellness programs.

Vicki Schnare, Systems Administrator at GN led the group through an overview of ergonomics and explained the reason this has become a topic of interest on the plant floor and in the offices. By definition ergonomics is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance.

EMC South Shore Members Have Good Discussions at Event Hosted by The Nodding Group (TNG).
The numbers were a little lower than normal at the table but that did not reduce the value of regional networking for the members who came to hear about and discuss a range of topics.Thanks to all who attended.
The event started with the normal round table of introductions and everyone was asked to talk about the outlook for 2011. It was unanimous that everyone was currently busy and all were expecting a busy year with some being concerned as to how they would be able to keep up. This is great to hear!

Lunenburg / Queens Members Meet at the Office of the RDA to Discuss the Skilled Labour Shortage
As a follow up to our SIG in January and at the request of local members, members along with some non-member manufacturers had a meeting yesterday at the offices of the Lunenburg Queens Regional Development Agency (LQRDA)
The group of Lunenburg, Queens and Halifax County manufacturers met with Andrew Button, the new Executive Director of the LQRDA, Amie Haughn the new Rural Development Officer and Anne Fownes the Immigration Specialist at the LQRDA. The topic that stimulated the event is the current difficulty companies are having locating and retaining employees with the proper skills as well as the predicted rise in demand for new skilled employees in the years to come.

Members gather at High Liner Foods Inc. to discuss the issue of the shallow pool of local skilled tradespeople.
The event scheduled this morning at High Liner Fine Foods in Lunenburg went ahead as planned even with a large nor'easter forecast to hit the area in the afternoon. 13 members were in attendance some travelling from as far as Truro to discuss the issue facing many local manufacturers, the lack of skilled trades' people coming out of our vocational schools.
