On Wednesday October 28th at the North London Community Centre the London/Oxford Consortium along with the Midwestern Ontario Consortium joined together for a very special SIG Event in conjunction with the London Regional Manufacturing Council. This special SIG Event featured the Ontario Ministry of Labour presenting the “Safe at Work Ontario” Program. This also counted as one of the EMC Safety Groups mandatory session for 2009 if your company is part of the Safety Group.

For this session we were pleased to welcome the Ontario Ministry of Labour.

The Ministry of Labour provided the group with an overview of what they will be focusing on now and in the future pertaining to manufacturing.

The MOL's "Safe at Work Ontario" program was presented by; Jules Arntz-Gray the Regional Program Coordinator for the Kitchener/London Ministry of Labour (MOL) offices. Jules has led major accident investigations, developed extensive awareness and understanding of the hazards and issues facing manufacturers, and is currently the Co-Lead of the MOL Internal Responsibility System Audit Project.

SAFE AT WORK ONTARIO…..A NEW STRATEGY

          Safe At Work Ontario (SAWO) is a new approach to workplace health and safety that builds on the ministry's 2004-05 to 2007-08 "High Risk" intervention strategy.

          As with the previous strategy, SAWO continues to focus on improving workplace health and safety practices through education, training, and enforcement of provincial legislation and regulations.

          However, it broadens the ministry's scope to include focus on hazards, strengthening companies' Internal Responsibility System, and promoting a health and safety culture

          SAWO is designed enhance the impact of ministry interventions on workplace injury and fatality rates by focusing proactively on the hazards that can lead to injuries and improving the health and safety systems at workplaces.

          Key elements of SAWO include:

1.       Expanded targeting criteria;

2.       Focus on sector-specific hazards; and

3.       Greater emphasis on health and safety culture.

Jules presentation is posted on the London/Oxford page in the "Consortium Members Area" of the EMC Webpage as well as the Midwestern Ontario page. It is a very good presentation full information you should be aware of so I encourage you check out the presentation.

There was also over an hour of questions & answers from those in attendance to the MOL. It was a great exchange of thoughts and ideas, time well spend foe both manufactures and the MOL.

This again was another very successful EMC Event. We had close to 100 people from over 65 different local manufacturing facilities.
