Green/Sustainability: Limestone Members Determine their “Green Footprints”
Laura Rourke, EMC’s Environmental and Health & Safety Specialist joined EMC members in the Kingston/Napanee region to discuss a topic that is showing up on our radar more and more these days – Sustainability and the role of manufacturers. A round table at the beginning of the event determined that many member companies are already being asked by customers to document their “Green Footprints” to assure that suppliers are meeting standards required to become the supplier of choice.
EMC's Laura Rourke has a strong back ground and interest in waste management and sustainability. Laura's presentation titled "Sustainability: An Evolution" can be accessed on the Limestone member webpage under "Resources" (Bottom left). http://www.emccanada.org/membersonl/ontario/kingston/2010/sustainabilitygreenfootprint2010pptx
There are also a number of other publications that support this topic available along with the presentation on the Limestone web page. The notes below reflect…
Future HR Requirements: Gananoque SIG Highlights Many Challenges and Opens Discussion
Manufacturers, teachers, employment service staff, student counselors and immigration support workers gathered in Gananoque (Heart of the Thousand Islands) for a morning packed with presentations on topics that will touch all of our businesses in the near future. The need for robust labour market data, the current role of manufacturers in ensuring future jobs and business continuity, social media and support for immigrants dominated the discussion.
The room was packed, the presentations insightful, the discussion lively and much progress was made that will help area manufacturing communities to plan for the future. 1000 Islands Region Workforce Development Board hosted this SIG event and working with EMC FSA, Gay Henniger, set up an agenda that would tackle a number of challenges that our organizations will be dealing with as Baby Boomers begin to retire. Most Eastern Ontario EMC member plants are already beginning to feel the…
A group of enthusiastic Eastern Ontario Human Resources and Health and Safety EMC members gathered at the Invista Centre in Kingston last spring to generate ideas and share best practices that would help to bring their Orientation Programs in line with changes in their hiring/retention programs and with changing employee expectations.
Orientation is one of those processes that many organizations have conducted in the same way, year in year out! This session began with a Round Table discussion re: attendee's past and current orientation programs. This gave us an opportunity to understand the fit of these programs to the size of the plant, who conducts the orientation and what is entailed in their programs.
However as we know "change" is inevitable these days and suddenly our orientation programs may not be as effective as…

EMC: May 26-09 - Knorr Brake Best Practice Presentation re: Customs/Duty Review (Rebate Recovery)
Limestone members were treated to a presentation regarding a very interesting opportunity that could affect their company’s bottom lines. Knorr Brake Ltd., Kingston has been examining their “office” processes to look for cost saving strategies. Working with a local consultant who has an expertise in the area of Customs and Duty documentation, they were able to review their paperwork sent to customs over the past four years and recover a very considerable amount of monies wasted through lack of knowledge o
Jim Heney, Controller Knorr Brake Ltd. noted that 80% of their product is sold intercompany to a sister plant in Watertown. Therefore 80% of product travels over the border. It is extremely important for the Kingston plant to continually be looking for opportunities to keep their costs low as a sister plant may choose to buy from an outside supplier if that suppliers costs are lower. There is no security for this plant. Freight, duty and brokerage fees represent a significant expense for…
G.T. Machining and Fabricating Ltd., Napanee hosted a plant tour and EMC SIG at the PE / L&A Business Centre. Chris Thompson of Eaton Electrical Service Division gave a very comprehensive presentation regarding Arc Flash (Electrical) – its challenges and solutions to contain incidents and serious accidents in manufacturing facilities. Most of the members present were involved with engineering, maintenance and Health and Safety programs in their buildings.
A copy of Chris's Power Point Presentation can be accessed from the Limestone member webpage. You are welcome to share it with others in your facility.
Flash hazard is defined as "a dangerous condition associated with the release of energy caused by an electric arc."
The heat reaching the skin of the worker (incident energy) during an "arc flash" is dependent upon:
• Power of the arc at the arc location
• Distance of the worker to the arc
• Time duration of the arc exposure

Napanee District High School and the Limestone District School Board hosted our March EMC event in the library of the Napanee District High School. Meembers present included a number of former students of this school who are now working in manufacturing plants in the area or with Community Partners. This fact was very relevant to our discussions - skilled trades, developing "home-grown" skilled workforces and programs available for students in High School and through Apprenticeship Programs.
Mike Sewell, Program Leader of Skills and Technology, LDSB gave a very comprehensive Power point presentation (check it out on the Limestone webpage). Mike noted that teachers and the Board feel that the critical factor that determines student success is the transition period from elementary to secondary school. A Manufacturing High Skills Major Program is offered at LaSalle Secondary School (Kingston), Syndenam High School and Napanee District High school. This program offers students the…
