Do you have the appropriate information to make solid and timely decisions regarding energy? I’m willing to gamble that you don’t. But it’s far easier getting on the path to success than I bet you think it is. We’ve turned many organizations around. Now it’s your turn.

A question many energy management service providers ask is: "Why do organizations wear blindfolds when targeting energy cost reductions?" Organizations often spend thousands and sometimes millions of dollars per year on energy and are making decisions with limited knowledge or understanding about how and when they use energy. Even more wonder how they are being billed for it. If you fall into one or more of these categories don't worry, you're definitely not alone.

Over the years I've had many…

Hedging electrical prices can be tricky

By David Arkell

Hedging the Hourly Ontario Energy Price (HOEP) has become quite complicated as the provincial benefit becomes an increasingly important part of the puzzle.

Compared to 2008, 2009's average Hourly Ontario Electricity Prices (HOEP) are already 25% lower. January through May, the average HOEP for all hours has been only $0.0351/kWh while average pricing for this same period last year was $0.0467/kWh. In addition, the number of negatively priced hours has increased from only 0.3% of all hours in 2008 up to a whopping 6.5% of all hours so far this year - quite a dramatic increase.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

Key contributing factors have been the steep…

Action must be taken on the energy front if manufacturers want to compete on a global scale.

Why do people treat energy like weather? Consistently talk about it, but think they can't do anything to control it? North America is currently in a perfect storm; it's very difficult for companies to increase their sales revenue so they are turning to ways just to survive and are doing everything they can to cut their costs. Similar to the hockey playoffs, every move we make in manufacturing can impact the final outcome and manufacturing viability. This is not the time to go through the…

Implementing the Green Energy Act is a step that we have to take, but it may be associated with higher energy costs. Therefore, energy conservation and reduction will be imperative.

The overall goal of the Ontario Green Energy Act (GEA) is to increase the amount of Ontario's electricity supply that is generated by renewable energy sources. The Act also includes additional government spending to encourage conservation and adjusted payments rates for various forms of renewable energy.

The GEA will assist in Ontario's goal to increase the amount of renewable energy in the province from 26% (mostly supplied by hydroelectric) to approximately 45% by 2025. The key driver for…

An Interview with the Ontario Power Authority

By David Arkell

360 Energy recently had the opportunity to sit down with Colin Andersen, the Ontario Power Authority’s new CEO to talk about recent developments in Ontario’s electricity sector.

The following is a brief synopsis of our conversation....

"With an aging infrastructure that needs to be replaced, the current economic environment provides a great opportunity for the government to spend their stimulus money. The electricity sector is a great spot to be right now"

With the recent introduction of the Green Energy Act, the OPA will transform into a different regime than what people have been accustomed to. Lately they have been an active participant in assisting the government…

Focus on energy for EASY $avings!

By David Arkell

Conserving energy is done at home but why not at work? This week, I'll explore the challenges surrounding this issue and with your input, touch upon simple, cost effective solutions.

Over the past month, I've had the opportunity to speak to over 300 manufacturers as part of EMC's Common Sense in Uncommon Times workshops. From London to Toronto, I heard the same thing: "I want to save energy and be environmentally responsible, but my team either doesn't understand the information received, or the financial payback is simply too long."

During my talks we had a number of break-out sessions and we discussed common road-blocks to saving energy. I've listed some of those below. If…

Green and Profitable

By David Arkell

When a culture of conservation is created, a corporation's image is enhanced in addition to the measurable environmental benefits it enjoys through sustainable planning. Dave

Keeping it Green

When reading through the strategic vision of any leading corporation, the main focus includes image, ethics, morality and competitiveness. Key examples include 3M, with its vision "To solve unsolved problems innovatively;" "Organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful" from Google; and "To enable people and businesses throughout the world to realize their full potential" by Microsoft.  These statements drive the companies at every level, in…
