Well, not just for the food! Cavendish Appetizers in Wheatly, Ontario, hosts their first event with rave reviews! As organizations continue to be challenged to do less with more, the Cavendish Appetizer Team has found a way to make it work and this session focused on sharing their discoveries on building a world class safety system with their fellow Consortium Members.

web-safety-and-snacks-Cavendish.jpgAn eclectic group of manufacturers met in April to get a glimpse of the safety system that Cavendish Appetizers had used to propel their safety initiatives while continuing to meet the aggressive targets for production and manpower utilization.  In 2009, with the loss of two positions that were dedicated resources to their operational Health & Safety system, Cavendish, like most organizations, was struggling to keep up with the demands of keeping employees safe while finding a way to…

During the warm spell in March, everyone was turning down their thermostats, opening the doors and windows and enjoying the early summer-like weather. How appropriate that the Chatham Kent EMC members met with other manufacturers in the area to discuss Energy Conservation.

EMC, together with their community partners, the Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation, the Municipality of Chatham Kent and Entegrus (formerly CK Energy) worked to produce an event that would shed some "light" on the available funding and programs that can help industrial and commercial sized organizations conserve energy while saving money.

Conservation goes far beyond dimmer and auto on/off switches and replacing light standards but for most organizations, these are the most…

Chatham Kent EMC Members Facing Labour Shortage

By Jeanine Lassaline-Berglund

Recruiting the right skill is a challenge, let alone building a retention strategy!

web-Skills-shortage.jpgCK Manufacturers met to discuss their workforce challenges and immediate and longer term resource needs.  Many are struggling today with finding the right skill sets for their organizations and have started to recruit from outside of the area to find the next member of the team.  As part of the round table discussion, the participants reviewed potential reasons why Chatham Kent is facing this shortage. For many, manufacturing had been the lifeblood of this community, and like many other…

Chatham Kent & Windsor Essex EMC Members Review SR&ED

By Jeanine Lassaline-Berglund

Member companies gathered to take an in-depth look at the review process of the SR&ED program and how Canadian manufacturers can prepare for a SR&ED review.

web-SR&ED-Review-Image.jpgTilbury, ON, EMC members quickly got to the discussion of what is really impacting each of their organizations when it comes to the review process when claiming SR & ED.  Most feel that the claims process is getting more and more difficult as the program matures.  Changes in the interpretation of claimable costs and allowable activities really puts some organizations in a difficult position as most do not have full-time resources solely dedicated to understanding and working on SR&ED.

Chatham Kent Consortium 2011….A Year in Review

By Jeanine Lassaline-Berglund

The Manufacturers of the region continue to make strides in having a voice and promoting the region, while focusing on growth and innovation.

Chatham Kent has long been a community with a large geography and diverse economy.  This year, the traditional manufacturing activities of the region have started to embrace a broader view of the term "manufacturing".  Family farms are starting into production operations; greenhouse and food production continues to gain in carving a landscape for the region.  Certainly, the industrial fabricators and manufacturers in this region are all too familiar with the Agricultural activities that support…

The Accessibility for Ontarian's with Disabilities Act (AODA), 2005, requires public and private sector organizations to comply with mandatory standards that remove and prevent barriers to accessibility for people with disabilities.

Special thanks go out to EMC Members Shari Blackburn at Batory Industries, along with Elise Marentette from Anchor Danly, for leading the discussion about the requirements of the standard.

As with many members across the province, understanding the standard and its applicability to the manufacturing sector is a stretch.  Most manufacturers, including those in this SIG session were finding it hard to think beyond the standard into how this affects their operation and day to day activities.

Chatham-Kent EMC Members De-Mystify SR&ED at GreenField Ethanol

By Jeanine Lassaline-Berglund

The Canadian Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax credit program awards over $3 billion each year in reimbursements to Canadian businesses to cover costs related to research and development. The objective of this federal program is to encourage businesses to conduct research and development (R&D) to improve the competitiveness of Canadian businesses in the global marketplace.

Special "thanks" goes out to EMC Member GreenField Ethanol for hosting this month's event.  GreenField has been producing industrial and beverage alcohol, fuel ethanol and distillers' grains for 20 years. Chatham has one of only three dry mill continuous ethanol producing plants in North America. The facility is uniquely capable of alternating between fuel and industrial ethanol production.

The company's Cellulosic Ethanol division, located in an R&D center in Chatham, is developing two…

Chatham Kent SIG Event - An Enlightening Perspective

By Jeanine Lassaline-Berglund

The Chatham Kent March SIG Event showed good representation from a number of different sectors. Thanks to EMC member Enviroshake for hosting this month's event!

It was a sunny and crisp spring morning in Chatham Kent and that did not distract our members from coming together to discuss changes at WSIB and understand a little about workforce planning.

Lisa Granger, from Mahle Filter Systems in Tilbury led the discussion with respect to changes in the WSIA that would impact WSIB interpretation and ultimately the employer.  All who were in attendance were glued to the points that Lisa made, as she walked through the impact on increased costs and…

2010 - What a year in Chatham Kent!

By Jeanine Lassaline-Berglund

Amid Economic downturns, cautious growth and recovery, many manufacturers in the region continue to focus on maintaining and improving their core business, while looking for expansion opportunities in different markets and sectors.

This year, the Member Companies of Chatham Kent have continued to participate in SIG events, networking and getting to know each other.  What has been discovered, like in so many other communities, is the challenges we face as manufacturers are common and we all have something to learn from each other.  For many, the opportunity to meet with other companies has been enlightening and we are all looking forward to more informative events for 2011.

The interests and topics have a varied range of…
