Our February 12th SIG was hosted by Blue Giant Equipment. The topic was Bottleneck Identification. Discussion included that topic and others of pressing concern to our members.

Many thanks go to Darrell McAuley and Andrew Morrow for hosting and for the very informative tour of the Blue Giant Equipment facility.

The discussion on Bottleneck Identification included the following:

  • Some bottlenecks are capital issues
  • Try to manufacture most components on site
  • Inventory issues - suppliers not carrying inventory, their suppliers not carrying inventory, etc.
  • Custom engineering - engineering can become a bottleneck.
  • The "office" can be a huge bottleneck:
    • streamlining order functions - getting in key components
    • trickle info down vs. waiting until all info is available

Further discussion included:

  • SRED
  • WHMIS & H&S training - the expense
  • EMC's 400 online courses
  • Yves Landry Foundation - discussion of applications & process
  • Pricing issues - There is more and more quoting going on and it is getting more & more competitive
  • VISUAL software for manufacturing - limitations - Version 6.5.3 is worth the upgrade costs
  • SOLID WORKS software with Configurator
