Brampton/Orangeville/Caledon Consortium - Engaging your JHSC

By March 8, 2010

The February SIG in Brampton discussed JHSC-Roles, Responsibilities and Ensuring Compliance. The great people at Par-Pak were the hosts of this event.

The swing in engagement by Brampton/Orangeville/Caledon members continues on the rise!  This month's SIG had 35 participants that came from many different roles at their facilities.   All that attended had some role in their Joint Health & Safety Committee, either as a manager rep or worker rep.

This session had Yvonne O'Reilly from OHS Consulting leading us through a workshop that helped us to identify gaps in knowledge as to the roles and responsibilities of the JHSC.

The feeling by many representatives of a safety committee is that they are whistle-blowers, especially true with worker reps that may have a short tenure in the group as companies try to garner more engagement.

We reviewed:

  • the structure and purpose of the JHSC
  • the need for a mission statement
  • the need for a terms of reference for meetings, workplace inspections, resources needed for your committee to be successful
  • the importance of goal setting
  • how to promote safety in the workplace

The presentation can be found in the consortium member area or by clicking here.  As well you can download the worksheets from this SIG through the Brampton Member page.  Ask me how.

If you haven't been attending the SIGs in yoru region, you are missing out on some valuable learning opportunities and benchmarking with your peers that may have solved your current challenges.
