Brampton Engingeering hosts January SIG event: Implementing and adapting a new ERP system.
Last month's Strategic Interest Group Meeting was held at Brampton Engineering. Special thanks to Bob Smith, VP of Operations at Brampton Engineering. He spoke very candidly about the issues and problems they face while trying to implement a new ERP system and integrate it with their current engineering systems. Brampton Engineering Inc. (BE) is the world leader in the design and engineering of 5 - 11 layer blown film lines for high barrier applications in the food, medical and industrial…
I have had a great opportunity to be a part of fabulous peer-to-peer networking events every month in the 3 consortia that I manage. Guelph Area, Brampton/Caledon/Orangeville and Burlington/Oakville/Milton manufacturers have challenges that are unique to their respective sector and geography but what has proven to be true in 2011 is that no one person or one company has all the solutions to all of their challenges.
Strategic Interest Group events prove to be an excellent resource for manufacturers, so they can meet these challenges head on with the help of their trusted peers.
I must first commend all members on the strength of their resolve, as 2011 has shown that manufacturers in Ontario are strong and ready to increase their manufacturing competitiveness with all the vim and vigor that they have shown in the past. We came into the year with trepidation and hoped that 'the worst was over'. While we…
The manufacturing sector in Brampton/Orangeville and Caledon started 2010 with a limp but it sure is in a full sprint now!
As I looked back at my Year in Review blog for this region a short 12 months ago, their was a hint of despair that was being overshadowed by cause for optimism. As we toured through 2010, this wave of optimism grew and the EMC Members were finding themselves in a growth position again! Of course the 'correction' over the past 24 months and the following move forward then presents new challenges...mostly how to do more with either less people or a smaller market.
The regional members took…

The February SIG in Brampton discussed JHSC-Roles, Responsibilities and Ensuring Compliance. The great people at Par-Pak were the hosts of this event.
The swing in engagement by Brampton/Orangeville/Caledon members continues on the rise! This month's SIG had 35 participants that came from many different roles at their facilities. All that attended had some role in their Joint Health & Safety Committee, either as a manager rep or worker rep.
This session had Yvonne O'Reilly from OHS Consulting leading us through a workshop that helped us to identify gaps in knowledge as to the roles and responsibilities of the JHSC.
The feeling by many…
The region's manufacturers put up a good fight in the midst of a recession!
Not unlike any other region, the manufacturing sector was met with some real challenges over the past 12 months. As I toured the region and met with all of my newly inherited EMC Members, the common theme was transition. The transition that manufacturers in this area of Ontario were dealing with was to move towards a more efficient and less wasteful operation. This is not to say that most facilities hadn't already had some strategies and tools in place prior to the economy tanking but the…
Almost 30 manufacturers met at Almag Aluminum in Brampton on November 18th for 2 dynamic sessions. A great opportunity to learn from each other and share ideas of what is working in their own facilities. The first session tackled Supervisor Skills & Competencies and how to ensure that the supervisors that you have chosen have the right tools to succeed. The 2nd SIG event dealt with Preventing & Managing MSDs in the Workplace.
An incredible turnout of managers gathered for a discussion on Supervisor Skills and Competencies. We had a great mix of manufacturing roles and sectors to discuss challenges in ensuring that the supervisors that are in place are the right people for the position and when given that task, to be sure that they then have the necessary skills and training to succeed.
We started off this session with a great overview of Almag Aluminum by Bob Peacock and Mike Taverner. They outlined their…
There is a great information and networking session coming up that you should consider attending.

Our February 12th SIG was hosted by Blue Giant Equipment. The topic was Bottleneck Identification. Discussion included that topic and others of pressing concern to our members.
Many thanks go to Darrell McAuley and Andrew Morrow for hosting and for the very informative tour of the Blue Giant Equipment facility.
The discussion on Bottleneck Identification included the following:
- Some bottlenecks are capital issues
- Try to manufacture most components on site
- Inventory issues - suppliers not carrying inventory, their suppliers not carrying inventory, etc.
- Custom engineering - engineering can become a bottleneck.
- The "office" can be a huge bottleneck:
- streamlining order…
