April's Regional HR Strategic Interest Group session was hosted at General Mills in Midland.  The topic for the session was Developing a Culture of Respect in the Workplace.

Discussion centred on:

  • Attitudes toward work from younger new hires
    • Laiser faire attitude
  • Over qualified people applying for work
  • Diversity in this area is basically non-existent
  • Hiring relatives - haven't really seen an issue

Bill 168: Violence in the Workplace

  • What are you training folks on?
    • Changes in the legislation\what it means to you as an employee\what your rights are
    • JHSC on board to assist to identify problems
  • Risk Assessment is key
  • How to get the messaging out
  • Ramifications of measures taken re:  violence or potential violence with employees - rights of victims and rights of alleged perpetrators

 Culture of Respect

  • Gossip re: company business
    • stems from boredom
  • Cliques in the workplace
  • Where is the line between gossip & harassment?
  • Facebook rants re:  work situations
  • Discipline for speaking negatively regarding a co-worker - haven't as of yet
  • Have leadership emulate what they want to see as far as culture
  • Address situations head on
  • Make everyone aware of expectations and responsibilities re: respect in the workplace
  • Conflict management skills training

 Roundtable

  • Doctor's notes with restrictions for light duties, etc.
