The Owen Sound HR/H&S Strategic Interest Group in Januaery focused on the topic of Mental Health.

The Owen Sound HR/H&S SIG in January met to find out more about the issues relating to mental health and effects in the workplace.  Canada will be releasing a voluntary standard for psychological health and safety in the workplace in 2012.

The Barrie/Midland/Muskoka Quality & Production Strategic Interest Group met in January to compare notes and share best practices regarding Employee Suggestion Programs.

Our host Canplas Industries started the discussion by sharing their efforts to increase & recognize employee participation.  Their employee suggestion program is a part of their cost reduction program.  They use many different methods off idea collection including person-to-person, web-based, and email.  Every idea submitted gets points which can be accumulated and exchanged for Jump gift cards.  A cross-functional committee meets monthly to review ideas and the ideas are tracked over a one…

The Barrie/Midland Senior Managers group met at Canplas Industries in January to learn about the new Digital Technology Adoption Pilot Program (DTAPP)and to review the Industrial Research Assistance Program.

The Barrie/Midland Environmental, Health & Safety Strategic Interest Group met in January to learn about changes and requirements for Environmental Compliance Approvals and NPRI Reporting.

This month, DV Systems Inc. hosted the Environmental, Health & Safety Strategic Interest Group session which was all about Certificates of Approval or Environmental Compliance Approvals and National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) reporting.

2011 was another great year of events.
There are Strategic Interest Group session for 5 different areas of responsibility in the Barrie/Midland/Muskoka consortium including, Senior Managers; Quality & Production; Environmental and Health & Safety; Information Technology; and Human Resources.

Another year has flown by and the Barrie/Midland/Muskoka consortium continues to flourish!

I was cleaning up some old files on my computer and I ran into attendance forms from the Senior Managers group in Midland from 2001 and in Barrie from 2003 - ten and eight years respectively of consortium activity in which I have been involved.  The manufacturers in Midland were members before I joined EMC.

DV Systems Inc. in Barrie hosted the Barrie/Midland/Muskoka November Quality & Production Strategic Interest Group session where the topic of discussion was problem solving and what techniques to use when a problem presents itself.

After a roundtable introduction and catch up session, the group got down to discussing the topic of problem solving and what techniques to use when a problem presents itself.

We looked at the four basic steps in problem solving and discussed:

  • What tools to use?
  • How do you know which tools to use for each type of problem?
  • How do you avoid "group think", schedule pressures, biased experiences, etc. to be able to apply critical thinking to successfully solve problems?

The Senior Managers from the Barrie/Midland/Muskoka consortium gathered on November 17th to meet and hear from Chris Berni, Manager of the Centre for Applied Research and Innovation at Georgian College.

The Barrie/Midland & area Senior Managers Strategic Interest Group session was hosted by DV Systems on November 17th 2011.
